HEY OUTTOWNERS
ITS THURSDAY—A NEW DAY
TIME TO GET TOWNED!!!
Still pray for the folk in Port au Prince and Chile!
As we continue our special month celebrations, April is National Poetry Month. So, to celebrate, we will highlight various poets from the ILLI MO area. This week we highlight Shirley LeFlore.
Shirley LeFlore is one of St. Louis' most influential performance art poets.[1] LeFlore is a St. Louis poet, performance artist, activist and educator. During the late 1960s, she was a member of the Black Artists' Group, meanwhile working on civil-rights and housing issues in the local community. LeFlore founded the Messenger Singers, a female vocal ensemble, in the early 1970s, and along with that group performed with musicians such as the trumpeter Baikida Carroll, and the percussionist Famoudou Don Moye of the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
Since her years in BAG, LeFlore has continued her involvement in projects pairing poetry with other artistic mediums, including the Free N' Concert ensemble, which combined spoken-word performance with dance and music, and the New York-based group Spirit Stage, a five-piece jazz and spoken-word ensemble that released its first album in 2002.
During the mid-1980s, LeFlore founded the Creative Arts & Expression Laboratory, an institution built from the BAG blueprint and intended to foster young poetic voices in the St. Louis area. In 1996, LeFlore appeared in the documentary film "Underground Voices," produced by the Tony-Award-winning poet Reg E. Gaines. She has taught at a number of educational institutions, and was associate professor of African American Studies and Women's Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis
Her work has been published in numerous collections and periodicals over the past several decades, and in December 2005 she received the Warrior Poet award from the nonprofit arts organization Word in Motion.
AND NOW TO THE BITZ.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In this pic (taken by King Yella) are the three M's here in the Lou: YOURS TRULY, Ma’at Atkins, promoter Mocha Latte and Hot. 104.1.s Micky J taking a pic during Latte’s b-day celebration recently at Karma Nightclub during Loose Cannon’s Friday Night Fixx. I’d you know that all three are related? Go to MAAT BITZ DOWN BELOW TO SEE HOW!
The big A&E Newz story here in the ILLMO this week was the NCAA Regional semifinal games being played Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome. One of the five teams that played here was Michigan State University Spartans. One of its alums, Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, was in attendance at the games (and was spotted at Sweetie Pies on Manchester for some crunch and crunch with his crew and alums—SEE THIS WEEK’S EVENING WHIRL). Other teams playing were Butler, West Virginia, Tennessee and Duke.
In other sports newz, the first game of the St Louis Cardinals upcoming season will be against the Minnesota Twins on April 2. Its first home opener at Busch Stadium will be against Houston Astros on April 12.
The NFL Draft is set for April 22-24 and the St. Louis Rams got first dibbs (the losingest team picks first) of who they want on the tea. Sports experts are saying that the organization may select star Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford. The Heisman Trophy winner worked out for NFL teams this week and reportedly did so well that one observer called his display the best he'd seen since Troy Aikman worked out for the Cowboys.
And in more sports newz, the fight that STL native boxer Cory was supposed to fight March 26 has been postponed one again for the second time. The title doubleheader was scheduled for March 26 in Las Vegas has been postponed after contractual differences arose between promoter Don King and ESPN.
Steve Cunningham was supposed to fight Matt Godfrey for the vacant IBF cruiserweight title at the Treasure Island Casino, with Cory Spinks defending his IBF junior middleweight belt against Cornelius Bundrage in the co-main event.
A King spokesman said recently that negotiations to televise the doubleheader on ESPN's "Friday Night Fights" fell apart, forcing the event to be postponed.
King won a purse bid for Cunningham-Godrey in December, and has requested an extension from the sanctioning body so he can work out another date for the fight.
ENUFF ALREADY--LETS GET IT RUMBLING!!!!!!!!!!
Newly OFallon. MO. area resident and baseball great Darryl Strawberry held a “Celebrity Apprentice” watch party/benefit in Café Napoli in Clayton Sunday night to watch the third episode of the new season where he was a contestant (he was fired by Donald Trump) the third of the season). On the episode, Strawberry wanted to get fired by telling Trump he should leave rather than Olympic sprinter Michael Johnson, who had managed the episode’s failed project. Trump suggested that Strawberry might just want to go home, and Strawberry eventually conceded that he did, “a little.” By leaving early, Strawberry didn’t win money for his autism foundation, but hoped to pick up some bucks from $25 tickets for the watch party.
Well we assume it was a decent crowd so we are sure he was able to give his charity a lil’ sumpin sumpin.
One of the big A&E stories involving an ILLIMOian was of Hip hop super groupie Katt Stacks getting pissed with rappers who hacked her Twitter account and her retaliating by giving out the real cell phone numbers to her jump offs including STL rap/mogul Nelly. Our thing is, if that’s the case, if folk call it, hundreds that is, it would be like as though you never had the number cuz, as I’m sure happened, one can’t get through. So, this Katt Stacks is mos def a stoooopid one. To check out her vid blast if you care go to
http://mediatakeout.com/39820/woooooow_groupie_katt_stacks_gets_angry_with_rappers_for_hacking_her_twitter____so_gives_out_their_real_phone_numbers_on_new_video_wanna_get_nelly_or_bow_wows_digits.html
UPDATE: We got word that the groupie was LYING and frauding the jump offs that she slept with any rappers, including Nelly. Media Takeout reported that she was bogus on her claim and someone found her emails and saw that she was lying. Sldo, Nelly recently lost his grandfather to cancer. OUTTOWN gives our deepest sympathies to him and his fam.

Last Friday was a nite for concerts here in the Lou.
One was Oscar winning comic/actress/talk show host Mo’Nique brought the house down from what we hear when she came through the STL last Friday for a stop on her SPREAD THE LOVE TOUR at the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Although not a sold out show, it was a good portion of the theater that were filled. OUTTOWN caught her after the show as she and her talk show co-host comic Rodney Perry (who opened for her) met their hundreds of fans who were waiting in the lobby to meet and greet the funny woman to take pictures with her in front of a backdrop that had a spray painted mural with her likeness on it (Talk about hood club down!) . Earlier that day, she and her entourage were spotted grubbin on some soul food at Sweetie Pie’s on Manchester (The pic is in this week’s Evening Whirl) . Last week, when Fox 2’s Kevin Steincross interviewed her via phone, she asked what was the spot to get soul food and Steincross recommended Sweetie Pies (talk about a free commercial , right? ). Well, she did arrive as soon as they opened around 10 that Friday morning. She was a no show at the after party at Exo, but after hugging and kissing and encouraging and taking pics for two straight hours, we understand why she didn’t show. Also that Friday at the Scott Trade Center were country fans who came to check out Martina McBride and Trace Adkins co-headlining concert during their “Shining All Night”tour.
According to St. Louis Post’s Amanda St Armand’s review, first headliner McBride was under the weather of sorts (and let the crowd know early on) but was still able to put on a decent show
According to Armand. “ McBride's stage set stayed fairly simple, relying on a bank of video screens that (happily) skipped playing her music videos and stuck to showing McBride or lighting effects.” As far as second headliner Adkins came up a bit limited in the charismatic WOW factor department on stage but had a solid set. The highlight according to Armand was “when he took off his untucked blue and red plaid shirt midway through his set and performed in a snug black T-shirt, every woman in the crowd noticed. And appreciated it.”
Two funny men, one with ILLIMO connects, are coming to the STL this month. STL native Joe Torry (RIGHT) will entertain at the National Bar association’ award dinner April 10 at the Renaissance St. Louis Grand Hotel and Kevin Hart will be at the Pageant, April 30.
Two ILLMOians made appearances on The Mo’ Nique Show last week. On of the weeks was Chi-town comic Vanessa Fraction (LEFT) who shared with Mo’ Nique her first time meeting the Oscar winner was at an Expo where she competed in a Miller Ginuwine Draft Comedy Search a few years back and Mo’Nique was a judge. Although she didn’t win, Fraction said that Mo’ Nique spotted her afterwards and wanted to get Fraction in the game of comedy cuz she thought she had promise. A few years later, Mo Nique contacted Fraction to be on her show (and no she didnt speak on her pending lawsuit and allegations regarding the Joe Torry fight she had with him in early 2009).
On the next particular day, STL native singer and producer Angela Winbush was apart of a special show entitled Mo’ NIque’s Juke Joint spotlighting unsung R&B artists. She, along with Lenny Williams, Glenn Jones and Cherelle . Before she sang her hit, “Angel”
She told her about her battle with ovarian cancer in the early 2000s and surviving it and that she was graduating from Ministry Academy in St. Louis and was seeking her doctorate in Divinity Studies.

Two local venues are bringing in national acts this weekend.
Hip hop duo 8 Ball & MJG will perform at Club Flava Sat. April 3 in East St. Louis and singer Justin Clay will perform at Janae's West on Easter Sunday.
Former KSDK television reporter Jasmine Huda has gone back to work but only behind the scenes for now. Last week it was reported that she going to work for KMOV (Channel 4). Huda quit her gig at KSDK (Channel 5) last month when she reportedly left the station after failing to reach agreement on a new contract. Sources said Huda will start working at KMOV in a couple of weeks as a producer but will remain off the air until Aug. 1 because of a clause, a GAG ORDER, in her contract with KSDK. The clause stipulates that she can not work on air for another local station (6 months )until then. Channel 4 insiders say Huda will become a reporter, probably in the 10 p.m. time slot, and will also be a fill-in anchor.
Whats next for Huda, a reality show? Hmmm.
Another is Phat Pheezy will perform live again at BlueBerry Hill April 17.

OUTTOWN has influenced STLians June 5th and Xplicit with what I posted either on my blog or write at the Evening Whirl
First rap trio June Fifth, last week, I blogged about their Facebook blurb in regards to their feeling dissed not by the women of the STL but the men getting hated on trying to get their career up to the next level. They were gonna call out the “bitch-assness” out. Well I wrote that it wasn’t many female movers in the STL who can really hate on them for starters and wanted to now who were the people they were talking about that were hating on them. A few days after my post, June Fifth posted on its Facebook page that I had blogged them and didn’t address my challenge to them to speak out on who were hating on them. It was more of hey, yawl, we were on OUTTOWN. LOL
And now to the Xplicit controversy.
Last Monday, my article on poet Xplicit was published in the EveninG Whirl (where I do my weekly column in the Entertainment section) under the section Finna Blow, spotlighting STLians who are doing it big and it about to blow up nationally Well, the article caught fire to the STL poetry community. I first got wind of the spark when my sister told me about it who got from our blood cuz who is a local poet here . Then a good source and friend text me that the STL poetry community was pissed of the article saying Xplict didn’t pay his dies and that he shouldn’t have been considered one of the creators of the new poetry movement in the STL.
My initial responses to both instances, “I’m glad they are reading.” LOL
Then I contacted Xplicit to inform him off this brouhaha that was going on while he’s on tour across several cities in the country. He then gave me the scoop on how many people are upset with HIM about the article, to the point that one poet wanted to literally go to blows with him.
Dayam is it that serious? Is the poetry community in the STL got gangsta like that?
First off, let me say this.
The reason why I did the story was because Xplicit asked if I would do one on him. I obliged. It first appeared on this site then sent to the Evening Whirl for its FINNA BLOW section.
I wrote the story the way I felt it should have been written.
Xplicit is ONE of the movers and shakers of the poetry scenes here Not THE ONE.
He is the only poet in the area that I know of RIGHT NOW who quit their 9 to 5 to do poetry for a living.
He is the only one in this area that I know of RIGHT NOW who got five business going in several cities in the region through the promotions company Soul U and the poetry showcase Soul Stages (ST. Louis, Fairview Heights, Peoria, Bloomington, and Mizzou)
And he is the only poet in this area that I know of RIGHT NOW who is constantly touring cities in the region and beyond promoting himself, his music and gettting PAID.
And lastly, he is the also carrying the open mic tradition to showcase both national and local poets on a consistent basis and given an added bonus by giving poets the opportunity to record their own CD live with Soul LIve.
Can many of you out there who’s spittin at open mics in the city say that you have done all this???
To me, his story is a FINNA BLOW story.
So I don’t know if folk were upset because of how the article was written or it as the man himself, but he sent me a comment through my inbox on Facebook from a reader of the article that sums up why the story was written,
”Big bro yesterday I read the article in the Whirl n it made me think about spoken word n I currently try to enhance my word play n content so it can get better n I've meet (sic) u a couple times at legacy n just wanted to say "Right on" because articles like dat motivate a lot of people to keep on going! My major problem is I get nervous on stage n to know some1 as good as u use to b nervous kinda make me believe it will go away!!!!

BLIND BITZ. Who was this bald brotha who was waiting in line for a drink at Flamingo Bowl this past Sunday?
BLIND BITZ. STL fitness model Fred "Radric" Williams spent a few days in L.A. to get a whiff of the city . While driving on Sunset Blvd, he almost whiffed out a hip hop rapper when his car almost hit this rapper who was crossing with two honies by his side but luckily stopped before his car hit him. Who is the rapper? (HINT. The rapper first came on the map in the eighties, is a West Caost rapper and who's name defines his "vertical challenges.")
PRO-MO-CIAL-I-CIOUS. Which promoter/socialite got it in this week ? Promoters Mocha Latte and T-Baby
Mocha Latte. (LEFT) This sista always gets it in every week and there's no question she deserves to be listed every week. This award winning promoter of Monopoly Promotions, started off this week being a judge in Alive Magazine's annual Iron Bar tender Contest at Flamingo Bowl. Then, she was was spotted attending the VIP Red Carpet premiere of "Skin" at Missouri History Museum. And of course, she gets it in every Friday and Saturday being the host at Karma Nightclub for Friday Night Fixx and Sutra Saturdays.
T-Baby (RIGHT) , This sista is fresh off her appearance at Monique's concert last Friday where she was the highlight at the Meet and Greet with the comic when she and her promotions team of Oooh Wee/Fyre Boy got the comic to say the name of their promotions team, not once, but twice ('Oooooweeee."). But this Friday, her promotions team will be staging the first ever all-female music concert entitled DIVAS IN THE LOU consisting of STL hip-hoppers and singers including June Fifth, Aloha , Ebony Eyez and Unladylike to name a few. T -Baby is also co-hosting this historical STL event. (SEE EVENT BITZ BELOW)
Mickey J. This brotha is getting his shoes worn in as he gets comfortable in them as the new program director at Hot 104.1 FM. On weekdays he does the afternoon drive on the station as well. On Wednesday, he hosted the Lyfe Jennings concert that was held at the Loft and every Friday he does a live telecast with the station at Karma during its Friday Night Fixx event.
AND
Tony Scott. This veteran of radio is the host of his popular (and long running) Tony Scott Show (formerly the Breakfast and Afternoon Crew )with his co-host, Tammie Holland weekdays on Majic 104.9. Fresh off his biting commentary on KSDK's Im Just Sayin segment, Scott hosted the film "Skin" that was shown Monday at the Missouri History Museum (and Thursday celebrating the big 5-0)). Plus, he, along with his radio partner Holland, are in the Big Four on Metromix's Mic Madness Competition for the top radio personality (SEE BITZ ABOVE).
CELEB-SITE. Last Frdiay it was reported that Aj former co-host of "BET;s 106 and Park" and Bone Thugs N Harmony were in the STL .
A source contacted us to say that both AJ and Bone Thugs were seen at the Multi-promoter networking event MPAC at the Black Label at the second half of their promoter party (the first was held at Lumiere Place).

Hmmm.
The STL-OCALS are getting it in as well:

And what was up with the owners of 2720 blasting the former owners of the now closed Lucas School House in the St. Louis Post Dispatch recently saying their venue was sold fashioned?
Congrats are in store for Ron Himes, producing director and founder of the Black Rep, getting hitched to Black Rep dancer Heather Beal. The two are expecting their first child later this year.

OH AND TO ANSWER THE QUESTION OF HOW ME, MOCHA LATTE AND MICKY J ARE RELATED? Besides having our stage names starting with "M" we all were at Karma Nightclub at the same time. So if you thought we were blood related well all we gotta say is

MIA FOUND. We did have a Facebook Chat recently with Bryant and come to find out he is reuperating from abck surgery after being convelescent for a few weeks. And, he is seeking to move his Nigerian wife to the U.S.
WORDZ TO THE WHYZ?????????????????????????????
Why is thr poetry community here in STL up in arms over my article about mover and shaker Xplicit? Why did Jamie Foxx call out Howard Stern on his Foxxhole radio Show (even calling Sterns; sidekick Mammy) knowing that Stern has some career ending ish about Foxx? Why is Ludacris on a song with Justin Bierber? Why is Erykah naked in her newest video? Why is the Corey Spinks fight constantly getting postponed? Why did Usher tell a male American Idol contestant to pretend he was singing a love song to him in order for the contestant to feel the song? Why did social and political critic Julianne Malveaux call Mo' Nique;s Oscar winning role in Precious as being a step backwards for black actors? Why did hip hop groupie Katt Stacks get pissed and put out rappers numbers on her webpage to get back at rappers who alledgedly hacked her Twitter page knowing folk will blow up both new media sites? And why do we care that singer Ricky Martin finally came out of the closet?
