THE BIG NEWZ STORY THIS WEEK WAS:

Chi-town talk show queen/mogul Oprah Winfrey has added yet another title of her many hats: cell phone cop. Last Friday on her live telecast of her show she had via satellite Michigan’s Governor Jennifer Granholm signed a state ban on texting while driving, effective July 1, during a broadcast of the talk-show queen's program. Telecating from Detroit's Renaissance Center, Winfrey sidekick, comedic actress Ali Wentworth hosted a Detroit rally for the Big O’s “No Phone Zone” (rallies were also held in Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles and Washington.) .

Winfrey also had people on her show to take the pledge to not us etheri cell phones while driving. Go to
http://www.oprah.com/packages/no-phone-zone.html

Earlier that day, Oprah mad eher rounds to targeted radio stations to plug her show including the Tom Joyner Morning Show

To hear teh show clip go to

http://v3.player.abacast.com/player/player.php?pid=reachmedia_tjms&mediaurl=http://wm-ondemand.abacast.com/reachmediainc/043010/OPRAH.wma&gateway=http://asx.abacast.com/dynamic/reachmediainc.asx

Now, Oprah did admit that she rarely drives these days (no shocker), but we think it’s a noble effort for her to get people to pledge espcially after the freak accidents that occur with those who drive while texting as well as those who are affected by it But shouldn’t it also entail driving wile talking on the cell phone too? That’s just as problematic. Here in the STL area. Illinois has that law to not be on the cell phones PERIOD and no texters under 21 (So those over 21 can thumb away!!!).

IN unrelated Oprah newz, Ms. Winfrey and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, and Gap creative director Patrick Robinson co-chaired the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala Benefit on this past Monday night in New York. This year's theme celebrated the American woman.

In the STL area, the big newz story was rapper/mogul Nelly and his cousin Michael Johnson being murdered last week and how Nelly ripped a new one for Fox 2 News for how they handled the story by involving Nelly at an incovenient time. ABC and Channel 11 News reports this week claimed that Nelly's bodyguard was murdered. Nelly posted on Twitter that it was actually his cousin.

The slained individual was Michael Johnson.

Michael Johson was shot multiple times outside of a home last Wednesday night. St. Louis county police responded and were brought to the home located on Nola, near North Hanley, around midnight. Now under investigation, there have been no arrests in connection to the murder, but authorities are on the hunt for the suspect and obtain some type of motivation for such a fatal attack. Currently, they are retracing Johnson's movements of the last 24 hours in order to find where he was and what could have led to the shooting.

Meanwhile, Fox 2 ambushed Nelly for a comment while he was handing out scholarships for studnets at Lindenwood College and his repsonse to them was: "I dont wanna talk about it."

So, Fox 2 (and its sister network Channel 11) went with the story that Nelly's former bodyguard was shot and killed, but Nelly insisted that the guy was not his former bodyguard but his cousin.

As a result of the ambush Nelly got livid and went on Twitter to tweet several entries that he was upset at how Fox 2 handled the story of Johnson and using him to tell the story. Plus, he was pissed off at how Fox 2 tried to get a comment about his cousin;s murder while he was doing a positive act by passing out scholarships to students. As a result, Nelly said that Fox 2 was no longer invited to cover any of his events--ever again.

Wow. Well to an extent we can agree with Nelly on how he feels. But on the other hand, why would be surprised at how the media wanted to spin the story. True, it was a bit insensitive for Fox 2 to get a comment from Nelly while he was scholarshipping, but we think Nelly;s PR people shoud have handled the situation by releasing a press statement about the issue and that Nelly wanted the media to not ask questions about it.

Now it looks as though Fox 2 attacked Nelly when in actuality they were trying to get a story. We don't blame Nelly for getting upset, but to use Twitter to voice his disdain, should have been handled by , again, his PR people. Maybe a press conference to tell the media how insensitive they were and demanding an apology for the error (his cousin not his bodyguard) and how they ambushed him.

Nelly also said on his tweets that why the media didnt cover his scholarship giveaway, but when we saw the original Fox 2 report, they did add video and sound bytes of the deed to add some balance to the Johnson murder story.

As far as banning Fox 2 from covering any of his events, well, we think the Nellster should check and see if Fox 2 has any affiliations with Universal, his record label, you know--just never know these days of all the congolomerates owning some or most other entertainment brands out here. Right now Nelly is upset, and he should be, but we think he should rethink about banning Fox 2 to his events.

In unrealted Nelly newz, he was among several celebrities that hit Diddy's party at actress Eva Longoria Parker's Eve nightclub in Vegas last Saturday after the Mosely-Mayweather Fight Shane Mosely and Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s. But from reports, the crowd was so huge that management was forced to cancel the red carpet event to ensure fan safety.

Week Seven on Dancing with the Stars and actress Niecy Nash and her “jiggly parts” is still holding on as Pamela Anderson was eliminated and Nash is in the Top 5 .This week, the remaining contestants on this seasons Dancing With The Stars were split into two separate teams for the cha cha challenge. Team Madonna consisted of Nash Evan Lysacek, and Erin Andrews - came up short against Team Gaga - Pamela Anderson, Nicole Scherzinger, and Chad Ochocinco. And though Nash and DWTS partner Louie Van Amstel finished with the lowest score of the night, Nash wowed the judges and even earned a "9" for her light-footed quickstep performance .

Are Emmy Award winning Chi-town actress/talk show host Sheri Shepherd and actor/authorHill Harper become "Sheper?"

We are not sure but that's what In Touch Weekly claims. According to the mag, it began when Shepherd and Harper taped a “Nightline” segment together in March. Reportedly, Harper reminded Shepherd off-camera that she had once rejected him in the 1990s. A so-called “pal” tells the tab Shepherd didn’t recall the snub, but “apologized and accepted his invitation to dinner, and they hit it off.”

A rep for Harper says that he and Shepherd are friends but “not dating.”

So what do you think? You think were secretly dating and just bating away the media for privacy?

Though Chicago native film critic Roger Ebert lost his ability to speak after surgery for cancer, he has found a new and powerful voice online. The film critic was chosen as person of the year by the Webby Awards. The 14th annual Webbys, which celebrate Internet achievement, were announced Tuesday by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550-member group of Web experts. Ebert was singled out for "raising the bar for online journalism" with his blog on the Chicago Sun-Times' website. He is also an avid Twitterer and is planning a new movie-review TV program that he says will have a strong presence online.

From reports it looks as though newly drafted St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford is ready for Game day Sept 12. The No. 1 draft pick is working the ball last week at rookie camp (which ended Sunday) and the coaches are saying that "he’s very smart, got a great command of the huddle and attention to detail."

In the five practices he's had , Bradford reportedly threw hundreds of passes over about a 50-hour period (despite his surgically repaired throwing shoulder)

Offensive cooridnator Pat Shurmur said Sunday after the conclusion of the Rams' rookie minicamp. "All the reasons for drafting him were obvious. He's very smart. Got a great command of the huddle. He's got great attention to detail.

With that said, we guess the "hope" is alive.

St. Louis native rock pioneer Chuck Berry recently made Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 40 Things to Be Excited About Music in the current issue with Black Eyed Peas on the cover. Berry comes in at No. 9 on the list, “because you can still see Chuck Berry play once a month.”

The accompanying text reads:

“On one Wednesday every month, at 9 p.m. sharp, a white Cadillac pulls into the parking lot of St. Louis’ Blueberry Hill club. Chuck Berry, 83, pulls his guitar case from the trunk and descends a deep set of stairs to the Duck Room, ready to prove yet again that rock & roll isn’t dead as long as the man most credited with inventing it is still picking and screaming.

Congrats to the King.

The St. Louis Cardinals are on a winning streak as the baseball season goes into its second month. The Cards were tested of its endurance especially after last Friday 's home game at Busch Stadium when tornadic weather hovelled over the evening game delaying the game for several hours. As a result, most of the fans left. After the sky cleared on early Saturday, The Cards resumed its game with the Reds at midnite and won 3-2.

OUTTOWN EXCLUSIVE: We spotted former St. Lunatics member Slodown recruiting folk for fitness memberships at the new Club Fitness in the University City Loop on Delmar this week. We were shocked to see him, but at least we know say we actually found where he's been since, in his words, was kicked out of the group last year.

"They are shooting videos and I'm selling memberships and got a real job," he said. Hmmm, well after that he said that he was kicking off his new label this summer called Rejec and we said the name of his record label before he spat it out. But he said that he was ready to talk about why he was kicked out of the group. He gave us a tidbit of why he was kicked out while he was with a customer but we gave him our biz card for that long indepth interview. Now, he did say why he was kicked out, but we are going to savor it. All we will say is, he was booted out cuz of what he said about one of the Lunatics. Hmm. We will keep you posted.
